Make sure to grab the appropriate gear and plan for the appropriate season to ensure safety out on the trails
A headlamp, or some type of light is a MUST when hiking in the dark. It is important to bring multiple lights and/or back up batteries.
A basic first aid kit should always be carried with you when hiking; especially when it may be dark or at times when the trail may be less populated.
Although this item is not a necessity, it is definitely a good deterrent.
The weather in the mountains is unpredictable and can change in the blink of an eye. It is important to have some weatherproof gear to protect yourself and your equipment.
It is important to have extra clothes or layers if yours become wet or if the temperature at the summit is drastically different than at lower elevations.
Sometimes our bodies near more water than we prepare for. Or there are unforeseen circumstances where you are stuck out on the trailer longer, the weather is hot and humid, or you may be doing an overnight hike. In addition to a bladder and/or water bottles, it is good to have a water filter in case you run out of water and are able to find natural water sources.
It is very important to pack healthy snacks that will provide you energy during the hike. Whether it is fruit, nuts, protein bars, granola, peanut butter sandwich, etc. It is also important to pack products that will replenish your electrolytes/hydrate your body.
It's good to carry a lighter in case you need to make a fire. Please follow all fire rules and regulations on the trail.
Winter hiking calls for much different equipment that is a necessity. Micro spikes, snowshoes, base layers, hat, gloves, etc. Water can freeze in the winter. Be smart - bring the equipment that makes you the MOST prepared.
Don't forget to LEAVE NO TRACE. Remember to clean up after yourself. Whatever you carry in, please carry out!
